First steps in tattoo lining

If you are taking your first steps in the world of tattooing, you will already know that lines are the basis of almost any design. Mastering the line is essential for your tattoos to have a professional finish. Here are some essential tips to improve your technique and gain confidence in the world of tattooing.

Choose the right machine

Choose the right machineFor clean, consistent lines, a coil machine set up for line or a rotary that delivers a good, consistent stroke are good choices for tattooing. Make sure the machine is well calibrated and runs smoothly.

Set the voltage correctly

The voltage will depend on the type of machine, the needle and your style, but for lines it is usually between 6 and 9 volts. Test before you start to avoid weak tattoo lines or overworking the skin.

Use needles suitable for line

Round liner (RL) needles are the most common needles for this purpose. You can start with an RL 3 or RL 5 for better control. The thinner the needle, the more precision you will need when tattooing.

Practice constant pressure

Neither too strong nor too superficial. The needle should penetrate the second layer of the skin (dermis), not deeper. If you see that the ink is not deposited well, check the pressure and inclination.

Maintain a correct angle

Hold the machine at an angle of about 45°, and make sure the needle enters perpendicular to the skin. This helps the stroke to be even and without breakage.

Stretch the skin well

Tight skin is key to achieving defined tattoo lines. Use your free hand to stretch and work on stable body surfaces whenever possible.

Confidence and rhythm

The pulse and speed must be constant. If you go too slow, the line may become saturated; if you go too fast, it may become discontinuous. Take a deep breath, relax and keep a steady, flowing rhythm.

Practice first in synthetic skin

Before jumping into human skin, spend some time practicing tattooing on synthetic skin or fruits (such as oranges or bananas). This will allow you to become familiar with the machine and the movement without the stress of making irreversible mistakes.

Frequent cleaning during tattooing

Clean the tattooed area regularly to see the line well and correct if necessary. Do not rely on the line while doing it if there is ink or blood covering it.
