Inkterview with Cube by Ink on Sky

Today we sit down with Oskar Piec, better known as CUBE — a Polish artist specializing in calligraphy and custom murals. His urban style blends tradition with modern expression, bringing walls to life with identity and movement. In this interview, we dive into his art and journey as an urban creator.

  • Meet Cube

Hi, I’m Oskar Piec, but in the art world I go by Cube. I specialize in calligraffiti – a unique fusion of calligraphy and street art. From canvases to walls, ceilings, and even floors, I love transforming spaces into immersive artistic experiences.

  • From Graffiti to Calligraffiti

My journey started back in primary school in the late ’90s. Like many young graffiti fans, I copied letters from magazines, created my own pseudonyms, and sketched constantly. Over time, I realized I enjoyed tagging with markers more than traditional graffiti. About ten years ago, I discovered online how people created calligraphy by hand – that was a game-changer. Inspired by Arabic, Japanese, and Chinese scripts, I began mixing styles, adding abstraction, and crafting my own visual language. That’s how calligraffiti became my signature.

  • The Graffiti Scene Today

The graffiti and mural scene is thriving. Over the years, I’ve met leading Polish artists and seen how they collaborate with brands and paint in amazing spaces. Turning your passion into a career is one of life’s best rewards. Personally, I stick to my style – if a project doesn’t excite me, I simply don’t do it. But that’s also what keeps my work authentic.

  • Graffiti vs Tattoos

Many graffiti artists also work as tattooists, and I completely understand why. If someone has a developed artistic skill set, why not transfer it to skin? You just need to learn a new tool. From a market perspective, more people get tattoos than would pay for your graffiti. Of course, these are just my observations – I’m not a tattooist, so I can’t speak for everyone. But I know many tattoo artists who started as graffiti writers. It seems to me that tattoos can be more profitable than traditional graffiti. Graffiti remains primarily a passion, while tattoos can become a real way to earn a living.”

  • Tattoo Culture in Poland

Tattoos in Poland are at a very high level – we have tattooists who win international conventions, which makes me really proud! I think tattoos have become so common that today, someone without at least one tattoo might seem like an oddball… (laughs). But seriously, tattoos are increasingly becoming true works of art, and people are happy to adorn their bodies with such unique pieces. It’s fantastic that this art form is being recognized more and more.

  • Urban Art Evolution

Street art has moved into mainstream spaces, but the spirit of the streets remains. Some artists still risk it at night, painting trains or city walls, while others work in modern studios. Urban art constantly evolves, and young artists with internet access bring fresh perspectives and amazing talent.

  • A Memorable Mural Story

In most of my mural projects, I work directly on-site without prior sketches – I tell clients: ‘Look at my portfolio, trust me!’ One memorable project was a 400 m² salon, including a 60 m² ceiling for a client who is now a friend, Łukasz Lasota. He insisted on a quick sketch, so I made one on my phone and said: ‘Trust me!’ The final mural looked completely different from the sketch – a perfect example of trusting the artist’s instinct.

  • Dream Collaborations

I love collaborating with artists whose style inspires me. Right now, my focus is on architects and interior designers. For example, I’m working on a school library project, painting walls and a resin floor. My goal is to bring calligraffiti into premium spaces, creating unique, high-end interiors.
